Born in Panama City to an artistic family, he has studied piano since childhood. He began composing in 2001, while studying at Williams College. His works have been performed in the United States, Argentina, Panama, Italy, Taiwan, Portugal, Lebanon, Brazil, and France. He has worked with ensembles including the Pacifica String Quartet, the Orquesta Nacional de Sopros dos Templários (Portugal), the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra (Michigan), the Ensemble SoundScape, the Anubis Saxophone Quartet, and the contemporary music group eighth blackbird.

He studied with Ileana Perez Velazquez, David Kechley, Gerardo Gandini, and Shulamit Ran. His music has been honored by the SoundScape Festival, the copyright organization ASCAP, Society of Composers Inc., and Frederick Fennell Prize, among others. He is completing a doctorate in music composition at the University of Chicago, and is the founder and artistic director of the Festival MusicArte.
